Redemption comes
At the foot of an altar
From the tip of your tongue
Through the blood in your veins
Spilled crimson on white stone
Giving your life away
A sacrifice, a repentance
A trade.
For the blood you've taken
With vampire teeth
And an utter disregard for
The value of life
Red pools spreading
Beneath warm sunlight
Over the cool stone beneath you
It will never be enough.
Such wrongs come with a price
That not even a cold, drained corpse
Can measure up to
It takes more than that
Thoughts and actions
All deeper than the flesh
Past blood and muscle
And bone and a brain
Delving into the soul
That we can only feel
But seldom, if ever
See
It takes a meaning and
A desire, made of substance
That cannot be felt
Nor tasted, nor seen
But it is unmistakably there
Just as a body is prostrate
Before an altar, it is glaringly
There.
It is impossible to escape what must be done
But it comes
As quite a shock
At what a "well-lived" life costs.
